Infos Seidenstrasse

I have compiled some notes of a Silk Road trip covering Pakistan, China and Kirghizstan in July/August 2004 by the Weis family (Manfred, Charlotte and Konstantin).

We had booked international flights Frankfurt/Islamabad and Bishkek/Frankfurt with British Airways via London Heathrow. Furthermore, I had arranged our trek in Pakistan beforehand (1700 EUR) and a pickup at the Torugart Pass plus a three day tour through the Kirghiz Mountains to Bishkek (912 EUR for the three of us with visits to Tash Rabat, Sonkul, Suusamyr). For the rest we relied completely on transport that could be arranged locally. We carried three backpacks plus two day packs with clothes, sleeping bags, sleeping mats, trekking poles and the usual travel stuff not worth mentioning. Other than for the prearranged services and flights we spent approx. 1600 EUR on the trip.

To start with: I do not recommend flying with British Airways via London Heathrow. It seems to be a common thing that luggage gets lost in the airport jungle while being transferred from one plane to the other. Though the luggage does get recovered eventually, you will be stuck at your port of arrival (Islamabad here) until the next flight is in from London.

Handy: We had asked our local Chinese restaurant to copy down some of our favourite dishes in Chinese characters on a sheet of paper for use in all the restaurants that do not sport an English menue (most of them).
