In the summer of 1977 my travel life was bound to change fundamentally. On a camping holiday in Tolon on the Greek Peloponnes I made the acquaintance of four Dutch teenagers travelling on a rail flatrate. The Dutch guys had bought a so called Interrail ticket in their home country which gave them free access to the European railways for a whole month. Several weeks later I checked with the Hellenic Railways OSE in Athens and learned that this magic ticket was also available in Greece. I had been hooked, but had to wait until my next summer leave from school to take off on my first Interrail tour.
